D — Zwei Professoren und frühe Vertreter der Forschungsaktivitäten an Fachhoch-
schulen besetzen Ende der achtziger Jahre ein noch weitgehend unbekanntes Forschungsfeld: Um-
weltinformatik. Aus kleinen Entwicklungsprojekten am Institut für Umweltinformatik erwächst bis
Mitte der Neunziger die international sichtbare Environmental Informatics Group (EIG), die gemein-
sam mit der Vorläuferin aktuell auf über 70 Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte zurückschaut.
Der Beitrag skizziert die Meilensteine erfolgreicher EU- und Bundesprojekte und stellt mit fünf
Ausgründungen die wissenschaftliche und unternehmerische Exzellenz der EIG-Forschungsgruppe
unter Beweis.

F — Deux professeurs et représentants précoces des activités de recherche en éta-
blissements supérieurs se sont chargés, à la fin des années 1980, d‘un domaine de recherche encore
largement inconnu : l‘informatique environnementale. De petits projets de développement réalisés à
l‘Institut pour l‘informatique environnementale va naître au milieu des années 1990 l‘Environmental
Informatics Group (EIG) visible, lui, à l‘échelle internationale et qui affiche à son palmarès, avec son
organisme devancier, plus de 70 projets de recherche et de développement. L‘article esquisse les
jalons de projets réussis financés par l‘UE et par l‘État fédéral, et il prouve, avec la fondation de cinq
sociétés, l‘excellence scientifique et entrepreneuriale du groupe de recherche EIG.

E — In the late nineteen-eighties, two professors and early representatives of research
activities at universities of applied sciences were working in a generally still unknown field of
research: environmental informatics. By the mid-nineteen-nineties the internationally recognised
Environmental Informatics Group (EIG) had grown from small development projects at the Institute
for Environmental Informatics, which now looks back on more than 70 research and development
projects, together with its precursor. The article sketches the milestones in successful EU and domes-
tic projects and, with five spin-offs, demonstrates the scientific and entrepreneurial excellence of the
EIG research group.
